La Basse-Cour farmhouse

Until 1999, La Basse-Cour was a working farm, with some of the outbuildings believed to date back to the early 1600s. The farmhouse was purchased by the present owners in 2000, after it had been empty for a short while.

All the animals, orchards and land, with the exception of one five-acre field adjacent to the farmhouse, were sold off separately.

What remains is a substantial farmhouse with its own private courtyard. All four sides of the courtyard are bounded by buildings belonging to La Basse-Cour. The owner lives in one of them - a converted granary, and is happy to help with enquiries, directions or even to help light the barbecue.

Since 2000, much work has been carried out to modernise the farmhouse. It has been completely re-wired and had new plumbing installed for a bathroom and two extra toilets upstairs. Some interior walls upstairs have also been moved. Downstairs, a new hand-crafted kitchen has been fitted, as well as a large wood burner for the cooler evenings.

Outside there is still much to do to introduce colour into the courtyard and garden. The previous owners' gardening consisted of vegetables, a few bulbs and weed killer everywhere else.
